The sad thing about older people and younger generations is that they seem to ignore each other. Many people think that since older people have less tolerance to activity and are not as mentally active as they used to be, they really don't need much stimulation. The fact is that these people are constantly looking for attention. This is what you can offer.
Start the right day
Older adults wake up earlier than before, as they need to sleep less than normal adults. A typical night's sleep lasts from 4 to 6 hours for the majority. You can expect to get up around 5 am at 7 am in the morning. It'll be nice to give them a good breakfast once they open their eyes. Say hi warmly and prepare the table. A good menu will include items such as oatmeal, a piece of apple or orange, coffee or juice and a tall glass of water. As you eat, give them an itinerary of the day's activities so they can prepare well.
It can help the elderly prepare for the actions of the day, helping them to dress, bathe and do their other bodily routines. Some will prefer to do things independently, so it's best to just give them items like the brush, the towel and the slippers and let them do everything else to promote independence and feelings of self-confidence.
Some physical activity
Start the day with some type of exercise to improve the condition and muscle strength. Some of the activities you can offer include a round of golf, swimming, walking to the nearby mall, doing yoga and going to the gym to train with a little weight. To do activities according to the preference and physical capacity of the individual. The session should last between 20 and 40 minutes at a time, even if the person thinks they can tolerate or do more.
Take the time to warm up for 5 to 10 minutes through stretching and cardio. Cool at the end also by stretching and bending. Be sure to bring a bottle of water for the elderly to consume during the exercises. They tend to dehydrate before others, so stay prepared especially on very hot days. If the older person experiences something painful or uncomfortable with the activity, stop immediately and find the source of the problem.
Buy toys
Older adults want to cling to even small material possessions as a way to alleviate boredom. Some of the "toys " or items you can give them to stay mentally alert and focused are a book, a cross-stitch game, a sewing kit, a drawing book, or a canvas. Take the Elders to department stores, malls or local bookstores and ask them to choose a couple of things they would like to have at home. You can also ask people, hobbies and particular activities they used to do when they were younger. Try to find things that you can easily associate with.
Ensure safety
Make sure that the older person is completely safe and secure in all activities performed. If it's hot, provide an umbrella, sunglasses and a hat. For the colder seasons, give away gloves, a jacket and boots. Protect the elderly from potential hazards while doing activities such as climbing stairs, practicing sports and cooking. Always be next to the person to help and prepare some materials, such as the emergency line and first aid kit.
